7 Golden Rules for English Speaking

English is known to be a business or corporate language across the globe. Whatever be the religion, caste, and language of an individual, English turns out to be a mandatory language if one desires to grow in the business arena.

Here are 7 golden rules for English speaking that help in effective and successful communication in all phases of life:

First rule is to speak slowly and clearly. Make sure that whatever you speak is very clear and audible. Grasp a command over your words rather than pressurizing yourself to grasp command over language in the initial learning period. Once you'll gain command over words, fluency will come automatically.

Second rule is to speak with confidence. Unshaken words and voice always create a good impression. If you are confident about how you speak and communicate then some faults are always ignored but if there is no confidence in your voice then even the smallest mistakes are noticed.

Fluent English Speaking - Basics of Good English Speaking You Need To Consider

All the orators, and writers (in prose and poetry) mentioned in the foregoing lines, along with Carlyle, Ruskin, Stevenson, Thomas Hardy, Wordsworth, Macaulay, Milton, Tennyson, Goldsmith and many others, whose writings are even now taken as standard of best English have scrupulously paid attention in maintaining simplicity, depth and educative value in their works.

Shakespeare is looked upon as the Father of Good English and a student desiring to have mastery over English does not fail to study his dramas (both tragedies and comedies); his famous tragedies such as Caesar Hamlet, Macbeth and the comedies which include Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Merchant of Venice, As You Like It etc. As said before, simplicity is the first external requirement of good English, as it enables the common man to understand the language. When a man understands a language he appreciates the meaning of a speech or of a written passage. A high toned language falls flat on the audience or the readers.Below are given a specimen of simple written sentences, and in a long sentence containing clauses and phrases, having the subject and the predicate far apart and thus causing the hearer or reader to scratch his head to analyse it and then make out its meaning.

People living in different parts of the world speak English in their own style and that is perfectly acceptable. It is estimated that over a billion people speak English as a second language. Only a few among them manage to speak English like native speakers do. On the flip side, there are only around 380 million native speakers out there. That means you are in the majority.

3 Ways to Overcome Motivational Roadblocks

It is not unusual to lack motivation after working on a goal for a while. Most of us reach a motivational roadblock. We lose the desire to continue toward our goal.Motivational roadblocks can easily be overcomewith these 3 steps:̢ۢReplace enthusiasm̢ۢUse constructive motivation̢ۢSelf-motivateMotivation not enthusiasmAfter weeks of working toward a goal, you may no longer feel excitement about reaching that goal. You have lost your enthusiasm.Enthusiasm is a short-term intense, emotional feeling. It is a feeling of excitement, but it does not last.Only true motivation will get you to the finish line.Years ago, I managed a telemarketing office (this is exactly what MOTIVATED me to finish college, by the way.) Every hour our team would stand up and cheer (like the cheers at a football game.)Although this activity did get the adrenalin pumping, it had to be repeated each hour. The enthusiasm did not last. Just as the excitement from the last hour began to dissipate, it was time for another cheer.Cheering didn't motivate the team, it excited them. It made them enthusiastic enough to get back on the phones. One of the cheers was "Boy, am I enthusiastic."They were motivated by the paycheck, not the cheers. If you are no longer enthusiastic about your goals, look beyond the short-term excitement and focus on the long-term goal and its rewards. Look at the paycheck, not the sale.

Drug Abuse and Society

Drug abuse affects not only the addict but also his family, friends, the neighborhood, and society at large. It also affects businesses and government resources, which can well be borne out by the fact that the United States had to bear the brunt of an economic cost of $180.9 billion for drug abuse.

Drug abuse affects the health of the user, bringing about sickness and even death. Moreover, needle-borne diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis are most likely to afflict the drug user. Widespread devastating effects of these diseases can be expected because nearly 3.5 million people over the age of 18 have confirmed that they had injected illicit drugs in their lifetime.

People who are drug abusers would go to any length in order to get the drugs and in this process they neglect the welfare and health of their children. These children are put to greater risk when illicit drugs like methamphetamine are produced in their homes by their parents because of the hazardous chemicals that are used in the process. Inhaling fumes and gases from these chemicals can put their health to great risk.

What is Drug Abuse?

Many people choose to ingest certain substances in order to achieve a mental or physical "high," but recreational drug use can quickly devolve into destructive drug abuse. Smoking marijuana and snorting cocaine are two of the most common forms of substance abuse, and these addictions afflict children, teens, and adults alike. Other illicit substances typically used as a vehicle for abuse include methamphetamines, ecstasy, and heroin. Each of these drugs poses a significant health risk and inevitably leads to harmful side defects such as respiratory problems, extreme weight loss, rotting teeth, and heart failure. Even legally obtained drugs, such as prescription painkillers or mood altering medications for anxiety, can lead to chemical abuse if they are taken irresponsibly. Commonly administered medications such Vicodin, Valium, and Xanax have all been co-opted by addicts and turned into popular avenues for getting high. The most dangerous aspect of prescription drug abuse is the complacency which develops because the substances are not viewed as illicit drugs.

Words Of Motivation: The Rise Of Lewis Hamilton

During the 2011 Formula 1 racing season, the young British driver Lewis Hamilton had a tough time and he was badly in need of words of motivation. A troubled relationship with girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger disturbed the concentration of the normally focused Hamilton and continued bad reactions to his normal aggressive but highly entertaining driving style meant that he ended up in front of race stewards on several occasions. On one occasion he even joked with reporters saying "I have a platinum members card to the stewards area."

Hamilton clearly found his own words of motivation as at the Abu Dhabi race, the penultimate one of the 2011 season, he pulled ahead of the other drivers and stayed there to win: just another chapter in one of those short inspiring stories we all love to hear.

Lewis Hamilton was born nearly 27 years ago on 7 January 1985 to a white British mother, Carmen Larbalestier, and Anthony Hamilton whose parents had come over from Grenada in the 1950s. Lewis was named after the sprinter Carl Lewis and was looked after by his mother for ten years after 1987 when his parents spilt up.

Words Of Motivation: The Dangers Of Labels

I have a small but prolific garden. In my wisdom I have decided to turn it into a wildlife friendly garden (in other words let it grow wild!). It is a delight to see it filled with birds by day and to see the hedgehogs come out when the sun sets.

Occasionally I see a pile of feathers in one corner of the garden. This is a sign that a bird of prey, probably a buzzard, has made a meal of a pigeon. He dives into the garden at speed and grabs the bird he has selected, sending a shower of feathers across the lawn. This is what buzzards do. He is designed for just this job. A buzzard is a buzzard and presumably never has any wish to be anything else.

I have some words of motivation for you: we humans are different to buzzards. We choose what we do in life. We select what we are. Some may find that hard to believe but it is true nonetheless.

Sadly however most of us choose to accept the labels other people place on us. Virtually every week I hear someone say 'I would do that but I am...' It is a disease of pandemic proportions. Maybe this is the result of the bureaucratic need to categorize people for statistics and the dominance of mass media but, whatever the reason, our labels become our prison.

Words Of Motivation: Dealing With Constant Change

Change is a way of life now.

Until fairly recently technology changed very slowly if at all. For hundreds of years travelling just a few miles was a great adventure to the average man and horses or oxen ploughed the land. Indeed the whole Imperial measurement system was based on the operation of ploughing. Even the upheaval of the industrial revolution only meant that populations were concentrated in town. Travelling abroad was the domain of the very rich or great adventurers, as journeys would take months or years, if the traveller returned at all.

Mail provided the only real means of communication.

How things have changed. The farthest countries can be reached in a day. In March this year the terrible Japanese earthquake and tsunami was shown on the BBC news only about an hour after the event. A month later the Royal Wedding in London was watched by two billion people on television and 400 million online. An astonishing one million people, many of who had travelled distances totally impractical a few years ago, lined the route of the wedding procession.

Live conversations with other people all over the world are now possible through mobile phones and through our computers: something that could hardly seem possible just a couple of decades ago. Even science fiction writers didn't predict this. As an illustration of how things have moved on this article was written in the United Kingdom and distributed by someone in the Philippines a short time after.

But still most people are afraid of change.

Words of Motivation: What Is Your Dream?

Many Hollywood films contain words of motivation and 'Pretty Woman' is no exception. Indeed, the tone of the whole movie is set right at the beginning when a man crosses the road and shouts 'What is your dream? What is your dream? This is Hollywood, everyone has a dream.' The truth is however that dreams are not just restricted to Hollywood - no matter where they are, everyone has a dream.

But these are not just my words of motivation: this is reality. Every one of us has a dream, something they would love to have, something that would improve life immeasurably, and something that would give fulfillment. I believe we all need a reason to live, a desire or a purpose that will drive us to move forward. I have already discovered that a strong dream gives me the inspiration to overcome my fears and improve my life.

But of course you will probably be reading this and thinking 'Dreams are silly and I don't need them. Give me some concrete words of motivation that will find me a solution to my problems.' How do I know you are saying this? Because I did too.

Leadership - 5 C's For Difficult Times

Leadership may be defined as the process of meeting and exceeding defined performance expectations through the aligned efforts of followers. Performance expectations are defined from the context a leader is positioned in. This could be a result of choice or circumstance. When confronted with challenging business conditions such as a recession, effective leaders reevaluate, redefine, reorganize and renew the areas that they are responsible for, to deliver results expected by key stakeholder.

Leaders need to manage the 5Cs of - providing Clarity, building Commitment & Confidence, displaying Control and managing Change. These 5Cs form a useful and simple to implement framework for improved leadership effectiveness.

Clarity - requires leaders to reassess strategies, objectives, business priorities and investments to ensure the organization is prepared to weather the challenges ahead. Fancy talk about long term strategy needs to give way to address immediate challenges confronting the organization. Clarity needs to be established among leaders on how current actions designed to deal with challenging times will not cut into the core competencies of the organization. Clear choices would need to be made to allocate required resources even in tough times at the expense of other activities to adequately strengthen the core in preparation for the upswing.

Leadership - How to Become an Effective Leader in Your Organisation

Leadership Development - How to Measure your Effectiveness as a Leader

The demands on leaders are growing each day and many find themselves being consumed in their organisation and not finding the time to be effective leaders.

Working "on the business to achieve results through others" requires leaders who are focused on what they need to achieve and are actively thinking about how to adopt the correct leadership behaviours to achieve results.

This requires a clear understanding of what leaders do. Many, when asked, find it difficult to clearly explain what they do to be a leader, and therefore have difficulty in owning their leadership development.

What is Leadership?

In most instances, being a leader means going out on a limb when everyone else is playing it safe. It means visualizing something very different from the status quo and then working to bring that visualization to life. Many of us mistakenly believe that leadership equates to authority, which it does in some instances, but authority is not the goal of leadership. So what is the goal of leadership, you may ask? Well, the goal of leadership is to bring about change with the help of others, by having them buy into the necessity for, or the possibility of a new and more beneficial way of being. Leadership is about not only gathering cheerleaders (people who believe in your vision), but getting them to work with you to make that vision a realization.

Do you have a vision?

Do you see a change that needs to take place that can benefit society?

Are you wiling to take a stand for that change and speak to others in a passionate way about it, making them want to join your cause?

Are you willing to be responsible for this change occurring in the world?

If you can answer yes to all of these questions, you have great potential to become a leader, however you are not one yet, because you yet to action where your resolve can be tested.

Leadership - The Empowerment Principle

One of your greatest calls as a leader is to empower others. The greatest leaders that this world has seen had the ability to find untapped potential in people and then empower them to do great things. If you want to be a great success as a leader than you will have to adopt the empowerment principle into your life.

You see, if you don't empower people you aren't raising up people to be independent. Now you may think that if you are creating independent people you are creating people that may rise up against your own leadership. However, most of the time, the opposite is actually true. If you treat people with respect and empower them to do great things, they will honour and respect you for that.

Leadership - Power Over, Overused But Still Important

The term "power over" someone reflects what most of us think of when we consider the use of power in organizations. It means that the person using "power over" is exercising control OVER another person or people through the use of formal authority and position, and the dispensation of rewards and punishments. It is generally associates with the transactional leadership approach.

Currently the use of this kind of power is frowned upon by most leadership experts, on ideological grounds, and while it is true that leadership that is based solely on "power over" is inefficient and hard to sustain, there is a role for it in the carrying out of leadership responsibilities.

Leaders are expected (by followers) to make the tough decisions, and sometimes those decisions may adversely affect one or a few organizational members. Sometimes the use of "power over" is required to implement organizational change, for example. To abdicate this responsibility often means the leader may lose effectiveness and credibility.

Develop a Leadership Philosophy

A leadership philosophy is a set of beliefs and principles that strongly influence how we perceive ourselves within an organization and those that we lead. It is an essential ingredient in forming our vision, goals and behavior within the organization that we lead.

First it is useful to define leadership. Leadership is the individual phenomenon of influencing others, inspiring them to do their best, Giving them purpose, guidance and motivation. The best leadership style is one that is adapted to the situation, otherwise known as situational leadership. Leadership is different from management as management does not have to involve inspiring or motivating others.

Most leaders in any role agree that vision, values, adapting to change, knowing oneself and others, professional knowledge and good communication are essential components of leadership. I believe that one of the most important elements of these is vision. Without vision a leader is lost.

Fight Against Corruption - After Deterrence Comes the Structural Changes

A campaign against corruption must be credible. The public has grown cynical. Citizens and bureaucrats have heard all the words before. They have even seen a few minor prosecutions. But the culture of corruption remains, especially the feeling of high-level impunity. As a result, people feel that awful sense of structural shame that characterizes underdevelopment. Its awful, but there is nothing one can do about it. Its part of the system, part of the culture. As one Italian said before the remarkable recent events, In some parts of the world corruption is a fact of life. Here, its a way of life.

Experience indicates that frying big fish can help break that culture of corruption. Big corrupt actors must be publicly named and punished so that a cynical public believes that an anti-corruption drive is more than words, more than a campaign against a political opponents. Importantly, therefore, the first big fish must come from the party in power.

Having said this, the fishing of big offenders can be overdone. At some point it is a mistake to focus on the past if it takes energy away from a focus on the future. An analogy with health policy is germane. If illness is rampant, it must be treated. But in the long run, prevention deserves priority. In the case of reducing corruption, prevention means reducing monopoly power, limiting official discretion, and enhancing transparency in institutions of the public and private sectors.

How Corruption Works

Corruption is the abuse of power for gain, such as political or personal gain. Wealth, power and influence are all related, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as people who grow rich are usually clever and in most cases honest (we mostly only hear about the bad apples in the news). Those who have achieved strong influence are by and large talented individuals who are in the know about a certain area of expertise. And those who grow powerful are generally competent individuals who can get things done. Of course there are those lucky enough to be born into power or wealth, but unless these individuals are particularly clever or talented in their own way, they more often than not aren't put into great positions of authority. George W. Bush is actually a smart individual, he made it to Yale and got an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, just look at YouTube videos of him from before the election and he seems extremely competent. What happened after is a different story.

To explain corruption here I'm going to concentrate on lower levels of corrupted authority in the private and public sector. Private sector organizations tend to be more efficient than public sector equivalents because a profit making private business won't last long with out customers actively choosing to purchase products or services from them for reasons such as those being better than the competition's products or services. Whereas in the public sector, a lot of the time the consumer doesn't have much of a choice or a say. Such as how the American police force is run, there seems to be a lot of room for improvement which just doesn't seem to be being worked on, there are too many horrifying examples of American police brutality out there.

Corruption As a Virus to Economic Growth

The term above is as pandemic as it is endemic to national economy. Why? This is owing to the fact that virus as an organism behaves like a timing bomb and reproduces every millisecond of its young. Corruption has been described as a virus because it reproduces as it permits the fabric of the society. The words of wisdom say that "charity begins at home" and here and now Nigeria will be the focal point of my discourse.

The national reserves have seriously depleted, a lot of businessmen are moving their business to Ghana while internal borrowing is on the increase. All these are a pointer that the nation is infected with a virus diagnosed as corruption. More over, this has continued despite the instituted and the assumed anti-corruption crusade programme. The list of organizations fighting corruption includes Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) etc. Let me remind you that corruption is a virus which myriads of all these organizations cannot cure or eliminate.

Corruption and Transparency

I. The Facts

Just days before a much-awaited donor conference, the influential International Crisis Group (ICG) recommended to place all funds pledged to Macedonia under the oversight of a "corruption advisor" appointed by the European Commission. The donors ignored this and other recommendations. To appease the critics, the affable Attorney General of Macedonia charged a former Minister of Defense with abuse of duty for allegedly having channeled millions of DM to his relatives during the recent civil war. Macedonia has belatedly passed an anti-money laundering law recently - but failed, yet again, to adopt strict anti-corruption legislation.

In Albania, the Chairman of the Albanian Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, was accused by Albanian media of laundering $1 billion through the Albanian government. Pavel Borodin, the former chief of Kremlin Property, decided not appeal his money laundering conviction in a Swiss court. The Slovak daily "Sme" described in scathing detail the newly acquired wealth and lavish lifestyles of formerly impoverished HZDS politicians. Some of them now reside in refurbished castles. Others have swimming pools replete with wine bars.

Pavlo Lazarenko, a former Ukrainian prime minister, is detained in San Francisco on money laundering charges. His defense team accuses the US authorities of "selective prosecution".

Corruption, How to stop ?

Corruption is a universal social phenomenon that exists in any culture and thrives in any type of society. Many countries claim to have eradicated corruption. By the same token many people believe that corruption can only flourish in bureaucratic societies or post-communist countries where every single matter is controlled by the corrupt government. Even though such a belief is very popular, the reality does not support such an argument. Corruption is all-pervasive and cannot be eradicated completely and irrevocably. It exists everywhere in every stratum of society. However, most people associate corruption with the government, police, legal system and other entities that are somehow related to the control and allocation of public resources. The police are one of such public authorities that are responsible for maintaining order and justice in a society. A police department is very similar to other governmental bodies such as a court of law, or tax collection service, etc. It is a common belief that such organizations tend to be corruption-ridden for one simple reason. All theses public structures receive and distribute the tax-payers' money, in other words there is no person totally interested in controlling the flow of funds like in a big corporation. A privately owned business is very different in terms of its ownership structure. There is a certain clearly defined group of people who own the business. It would be reasonable to assume that they are very much interested in controlling the monetary resources they invested in the business. Thus, there is a clear incentive to control the flow of resources in that kind of organization. A public organization that is not owned by any private entity is very different. It is very similar to a communist country where there is no clear line of command and responsibility. Even though the structure of the organization such as a police department generates favorable soil for corruption to flourish, the society must devise clearly outlined strategies in order to tackle this social vice that is definitely responsible for generating losses for the society and undermining the notion of justice, order, social equality and democracy.
